Volunteering at my kid’s school to teach nutritional education: Part 2

The second part of this series that I held this week, was a class about Fruits. I brought in a homeade chart that showed the vitamins A, B, C, D, E in one column, a photo or drawing of what part of the body these vitamins helped in the next column and in what foods these vitamins could be found in the next column. These kids can not all read yet so this visual was key. So for instance, the first column showed Vitamin A, the next column showed a drawing of an eye and the third column showed a drawing of a carrot. And so on. The chart did not have only fruits because they will keep it hanging in their classroom through all four sessions.
Afterwards, I showed the kids actual fruits by groups:
Citrus-I showed them examples of citrus fruits from oranges, to clementines(see photo) to key limes. We sliced them open so they could see and smell them. Then we passed out oranges for the kids to eat. Surprisingly, many kids wanted to eat the lemon slices too! I also showed them how to zest a lemon to make savory dishes using citrus as well.
Berries-we looked at all different kinds of berries and made a fruit smoothie in a blender using blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, a little ice and some plain yogurt. The kids helped make the snack and they loved the taste!
The kids went crazy over these clementines-easy to peel and you can buy a crate of them for $10 or less.
Tropical fruits-we made Rachael’s Banana Sushi, tasted mangoes, pineapple, papaya, kiwi, watermelon.
Exotic-we talked about what fruits we grow here in the USA, like oranges and cranberries, but we also talked about fruits that are grown overseas and I was able to bring in a few examples of those. I found an Asian Pear in my local market and only one kid knew what it was.
Dried fruits-We also passed around dried figs, apricots and raisins and talked about how these snacks were made.
At the end of the class, every single bit of fruit I had brought with me was eaten!! I have a feeling the fruit day will be our most popular.
