What can I use instead of buttermilk?

Hi “Cooks”,

I’m Lilia Obial from the Philippines and I LOVE watching your show. I often encounter BUTTERMILK in recipes but we do not have this readily available here. I tried out the local powdered milk and reconstituted it, however, it turned out “yucky”. What would you recommend to use as a substitute please? Thanks so much!

Dear Lilia,

Don’t worry if you don’t have buttermilk on hand.  You can add a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes. It works just as well.
