Turn on the news and you’ll hear another story about the skyrocketing price of food. Go to the web and you’ll read about the toll it’s taking on American families. This year, more than one million New Yorkers are turning to food pantries and soup kitchens for help. With the number of families in need on the rise, the city’s emergency food services are struggling to keep up, and are running out of money, resources and food.
In response, this fall, Yum-o! enlisted the help of the Rachael Ray show's and The Tyra Banks Show's studio audiences to support our core "FEED" work area: feeding hungry kids and raising awareness about hunger in America. Yum-o!'s "If You Can…We Can" food drive challenged every audience member to bring a healthy, canned food with them to the daily tapings of the show for collection by City Harvest, a food rescue organization in New York City. Audience members donated 5550 pounds of food, while Del Monte Foods and Boston Market were inspired to support the program as well, making donations of 50,000 pounds of canned goods and more than 8,000 pounds of fresh poultry, respectively, to be used in New York City food pantries and soup kitchens. A grand total of 63,550 pounds of food was collected!
To extend the reach of the program nationwide, Yum-o! has agreed to match the total pounds collected "dollar to pound" and donate $63,550 to Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest). This monetary donation will help buy an additional 1,271,000 pounds of food, enough for 1,016,800 meals this holiday season.
