“DogCatemy Awards”

The North Shore Animal League, one of the largest no kill animal shelters, puts on this annual awards show called the “DogCatemy Awards” , get it?  That is too funny! This year, John and I attended and we were able to bring Isaboo! We rarely get out as a family so we were pretty psyched about that!

Rachael Ray and John Cusimano with Isaboo

Awww, don’t we look proud? You can read more about this event at their website. It was so much fun seeing all of these celebs with their pooches. We didn’t win but one of the winners, Bianca, dedicated her award to Izzy! I think Izzy has a new friend!

    Hi Rachael!
That picture is so cute!! What a family! :-)

Speaking of kids, I have wanted to toss this thought to you for a while now…so if I may!? I have a young son (5 yrs. old) who has multiple food allergies. There is so little out there in mainstream cooking/recipes/info on the topic that I am often stumped about what to cook. In our house we have to avoid all dairy, eggs, and peanuts. I would LOVE it if you could tackle the subject some time or at least throw a couple of suggestions out there for substitutions, etc. Thanks for considering it! You are the best and my whole crew loves watching you! Keep it up!

    Hi Rach,
What a great picture. My yellow lab Thunder wishes Izzy a wonderful holiday season. And we all want to say we LOVE you and your shows and watch when ever we can. I just got a job working for girl scouts in PA setting up programs for them and the girls want to do cooking so looking into setting that up hoping to find someone to come and do it.
    Have a wonderful Holiday.
    Love,

    Hi Rach,
Great picture, I have always heard that pets and their owners resemble eachother. I think Izzy looks more like John ;-). Keep up the good work. I really enjoy watching your shows, every night from 6-7 pm. Remember
    “Good cookin’lasts, Kissin’ don’t”

  8. First, I just want to say that I think it’s wonderful that you own a pit bull. I have an albino red-nosed pit bull named Gimli (yes, after the dwarf from “Lord of The Rings”…he was the runt of the litter and is incredibly sweet and loving!). I’ve heard of the DogCatemy Awards and I think it’s great what the North Shore Animal League is doing for the homeless pets of the world. Every animal deserves a chance!

I watch your show daily, and I couldn’t help but notice your voice problems. We all know what it’s like to lose your voice, and I bet it must be terrible to deal with as a talk-show host! Here is a recipe I picked up from some choral-education friends back in college that works GREAT to help speed up your vocal recovery:

    1 Tbsp. white vinegar
    1 Tbsp. lemon juice
    1 Tbsp. honey
1 cup HOT water (as hot as you can stand to sip!)

If I remember correctly, the vinegar helps open up your throat, the lemon juice helps in the healing process, the honey is soothing (and of course sweetens it!), and the hot water…well, it wouldn’t work without it! Sounds weird, I know, but it really doesn’t taste bad and it WORKS!

Keep it up and feel better soon!

  10. Rach,
I must say I am happy you are advocating in defense of pits everywhere. I have been denied service at PetSmart because my pup Daisy, has a little bit of pit in her, (pit-terrier) so I just say she is an American Staffordshire. Why in the heck should I ever cover her true breed??? She’s sweeter than any animal I have ever encountered. Anyway, long story short, PetSmart recommended I put Daisy down, apparently American Staffies, and pits are now banned in Pulaski County Arkansas, but they cannot touch Little Rock AFB yet, and I am scared out of my mind that I will be ordered to put here down due to local sanctions. Please keep fighting the good fight for the wonderful animals. Thank you Rach, keep it up.

She has brought so much love and joy into our home and has join our other “baby” Bella. Hope you John have a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! ROCK ON

    Hey Rach,
Thank you for what you do! You have inspired me to breathe new life into cooking for my family. You are so much fun to watch and I feel like you are one of my best friends. My husband of 20 years says he’s in love with you…sort of…for helping me cook, and always asks what are “we”, (you and me) cooking. You are quite a blessing…I know! Merry Christmas to you and those you love!

    Hi Rach,
Your great. Everything you do is great. And as many before me have already stated, you really do inspire people to try harder to be the best they can be.
My husband and I take in stray cats. Right now we have 23. All fixed, and current shots. We used to say we take them in and get’em fixed up to give them away. Yeah Right!!!! We have never let a cat go that we have found, or has been dropped off to us.
I think it’s great that your so involved in charities of all sorts.
Thanks for giving even those of us that could never cook well a new start in the kitchen.
Happy Holidays to your many show staff people, and to your family. God Bless and stay safe.

    Rach,

Thank you and God bless you for owning a beautiful pitbull. I am married and a student and we have 3 beautiful pitbulls one whom was rescued from fighing and severe abuse. We do not have much, as I have lost 5 children, and I am attending college and will be getting my associate degree, and then trying to get admitted to the nursing program. But our three babys come first we love them so much although they are a handful and can be expensive I would love to send you a picture of them. You and my husband and dogs gave me the inspiration to give 100% in school everyday because I see how hard you work. Thank you for that. Stephanie from Lansing,MI

  18. We wanted to say that it’s great what you’re doing to promote your love for pitbulls. We have two of our own (and a Pomeranian) and we foster two pitbulls for our local pit rescue organization, Mid-America Bully Breed Rescue in the Kansas City area. They are terribly misunderstood, banned, and murdered for reasons that absolutly do not make any sense. They really enjoyed your sour cream and chive smashed taters we had for dinner tonight and we all want to say thank you! Keep up the great work and help us rid the insanity of BSL so no other innocent dogs have to be murdered! Thanks!!

I seen the show today and you had a book about a little shelter dog. You said it was about how dogs can be good with good parents. My family owns 3 dogs and 1 is a pitbull we got 9 yrs. ago,the best dog.We have 3 kids and 2 are deaf and Shadow, our pitbull, knows sign language. So our oldest can tell her what he wants in sign and she listens, she is great. She is like a second mother 2 my boys. Our city council banned pitbulls from our city saying they are dangerous so we moved to the county so we could keep Shadow. So i just wanted to say thanks for your coment about pits. It nice to see a sweet person like you have a pit and give her a good home.Cause so many dogs go to the wrong people and they give our dogs a bad name. So a Big Thanks to You.

  37. Your dog is great. We have several cats that have found their way to our doorstep from being dumped and a dog adopted from ARF. We are hearing about all this lead in children’s toys and jewelry. What about pet toys and fish tank decorations? Also, the dog rawhides made in the USA we know are protected from the disease Scappies but how do we know the other countries are careful with their animal by-products? I only buy USA rawhides. Just something every pet owner should think about.

  44. Hi Rachael,

I just love your show and love that your family involves your dog. Although I have three human children… (lol)…, I live on my own now and my family involves four dogs (two Jack Russells, two Alaskan Huskies - retired sled racing dogs), and three cats. Recently I bought an auto repair company in the country and adopted another five chickens, and added two more, two goats and a donkey (call him Donkay, like on Shrek). They are my babies now and I highly advocate the no kill. My parents used to tell me I should have been a vet, but I kind of like the giving a home to animals versus the not so nice experience veterinarians have to deal with.

Sorry for the long blog, but a quick question in ending this. My nephew is 23 and has cancer. He is a husband and father of twho young ones. Do you have recipes that help cancer patients?

    Go North Shore!

  46. Rachael,
I have a 3 year old daughter named Isabelle and she LOVES you! Wherever she is in the house, she stops what she is doing and comes running into the living room shouting, “It’s Rachel Ray, it’s Rachel Ray,” when the 30 Minute meals intro begins. I got her a little play kitchen set for Christmas and she loves setting up on the coffee table and cooking with you! You’ve helped turn my daughter into a little chef! She loves to help mommy cook in the kitchen and I’ve learned to give her a little cutting board, a butter knife and small portions of whatever I’m working with so we can have our own cooking show together while I prepare dinner. Thanks so much for inspiring her little mind!

Hi Rachael, I watch your show every chance I get and was delighted to hear you speak positivly about “Pit Bulls” on a show last week. I don’t have one but I have met a few and the ones I met were absolute butt wiggling sweethearts. Sadly I live in Minnesota and there is a State Rep here that plans to introduce BSL legislation next year banning not only Pits but also Akitas, Rotts,Chows, & Wolf hybrids Statewide. It’s crazy and there has already been a lot of organized movement against this so we’ll see what happens. I think anything positive in the media helps so thank you again on their behalf.

    Hi Rachael,
I love the picture of you, John and Izzy. We have our daughter’s Pit (Brewski) living with us until she can find a place to live in Arizona that she can take him with her too. It’s hard to find places there, it’s so expensive for a working girl & college girl to be able to afford the extra they need to pay to have a Pit live there. It’s ridiculous how people have made such a bad name for Pits. Brewski is the most loveable, smart, affectionate dog we’ve ever had around. He plays so well with my two year old grandson Ryder and my nephew and neice, he loves kids and other animals. He takes care of our 12 yr old Cocker Malachi, protects him. What a joy to have him here, Papa and Grandma will miss him so much when his “mom” Renee takes him back to live with here. We love him very much.
Have a Happy New Year. (love your show).

I will NEVER visit PetSmart again after what they did to you and your Pit. We have a Stafforshire Pit and he’s beautiful and loveable and how dare they do that to you. They have some nerve telling you to put your Pit down. Good luck on keeping your “baby” and don’t let anyone ever have him put down, they can just go to heck! Go online and check the areas you can keep a Pit in Arkansas, I know my daughter had hers living with her in Matthews and Piedmont, AR.
    Good Luck.

Love your show. I love all animals large and small. I think education about pits is the key. So many times pits are in the hands of irresponsible owners. Irresponsible pet owners are not only pit owners. Thanks for being a responsible pet owner. Have you ever considered having Cesar Millan (a.k.a) The Dog Whisper, on your show. He owns pits and is an educator about pits and all dogs.

We have one named Nakita who is a big baby, thinks she’s a lap dog and tries to mother my 1yr old grandson when he’s here. Our other dog is a german shepherd cross named Rascal. He was a shelter dog. I would certainly encourage people to look at their local shelters to find great pets. Toni

  72. Cute picture! I got hooked on you while in the hospital just before Christmas, all the rest of the shows were boring then I found the cooking channel. I liked yours best!
What no cats made the awards??? I have 5 of my own (Sugar, Spice, Promice, Adam & Rosie) they watch with me too!

  73. Aloha Rach,

We enjoy all your shows and are graceful for all you do to bring health eating back into the home (especially the veggie entrees). My wife is President of Georgia Humane Society. In 2007 they rescued over 1,800 dogs in Georgia; 500 of those were transported to North Shore Animal League. What a great place!

    Thanks,

  75. YOU ARE DOING SO MUCH ALL OF THE TIME,HOW DO YOU STILL HAVE TIME FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY? ALTHOUGH I SO UNDERSTAND THAT IF YOU LOVE YOUR JOB IT REALLY ISN’T WORK AT ALL. PLEASE KEEP UP THE EFFORT SO THAT IT WILL RUB OFF ON MORE PEOPLE.

  76. I’m probably too old for most of your viewers to be interested in what I have to say, but I am out there doing my part against animal abuse.

I just want you to know that this 72 year old Grandma in Michigan is fighting animal abuse in my own way. I wrote a story (about Dotty the orphaned black bear cub who was adopted by a grandma and grandpa) for the kids at my local elementary school after being inspired by the recent events of Michael Vick’s horrible animal abuse. I feared the kids hearing the horrible news and getting the wrong ideas and I wanted to try and show them they need to show compassion and respect for all animals. The story has turned into a book “WILD THING”…my first book. If you go to my web site (not too well designed…I did it myself) you can see what I have done and see what this is all about. I am hoping to get this educational, passionate and caring book out to kids somehow but I don’t really know how. So, I am just selling a few on the internet and at the school for now. Hopefully, I will be able to have a book signing in some store soon. Some local book stores have agreed to put some in on consignment. The book is done up nicely with coloring pages that were illustrated by the students at the elementary school and myself, throughout, and I even made a story CD with background music of “Wild Thing” so they can hear it, too. A read it, color it and hear it book I thought would be really unique. I hope you enjoy my idea and agree with me. Keep up the good work.

I love seeing celebs with their pets, especially rescue dogs! My husband and I volunteer with an animal rescue group here in upstate NY. We are looking to do a HUGE fund raiser and hope to grow as large as North Shore Animal League someday. I love their newsletter!
Animal rescue and spay and neuter is so very important.
Its great to see you involved yet again in a worthwhile and important endeavor.

  78. Good for you Rachael!!! Thank you for stepping up to a worthy cause. Isaboo is adorable!

  79. Hi Rachael, so nice meeting you at the DogCatemy Awards. My dog, Bocker the Larbadoodle, was all decked out in tuxedo and tails and was so happy to get a hug and a kiss from you. Sorry you had laryngitis, but you looked great!!! Glad you support such a wonderful cause. Nice when we can bring our pooches to a classy affair.

I just wanted to thank you for all you do - and for showing that Pitbulls are truly wonderful dogs. I started out several years ago with one Red Nose Pit, Chopper, who has been my companion and best friend - then I got Kelly, a Carver bred brindle, who really needed a home, and last I got Maddox, another Red Nose Pit, who was my daughter’s dog until they moved to an area that wouldn’t allow the breed. He flew home with me from Virginia to Montana. Now that I am retired, I can watch your show almost every afternoon and have really picked up some good recipes and kitchen hints, along with great entertainment. Thanks again - and keep doing what you do

You could probably sneak into either place and enjoy yourselves without being bombarded by fans. Thanks for being you and giving back to the people that need it.

    Hi Rach,
First off, I love you. Your are an amazing person inside and out, your a one the “for real” TV hosts I have watched in years. My boyfriend thanks god for you at every meal…lol, you taught me what I know and I am still learning. Anyway, I am new to this site and I wantd to send you a email directly but amunsure how. i love that you have a Red Nose Pittbul, she is beautiful, we also had a Red Nose Pitt named Isis ( Ice-Is ), it stands for a greek goodess, after having her for 3 years and 2 litters later we went out of town and left her at the dogsitter, which we had done before in the past, only to come home and find out that they we unsure of her and her what she may do with their children that they took her down a country lane to run next to the 4 wheller( something she enjoyed daily was to run in the sun) and “shot” her in the head!! I can’t even express nor tell you what happeneed when I got home. We moved immidately from the area, it has been 4 years now but the hurt is still very fresh in my heart. The loss of her is to much for me to bare at times. i upsets me that these georgeous animals are not given a chance in life becasue of who they are, all animals are made into what we as owners make them to be. Pitts trust with all their heart, they “trust’ they hands that feed, love, bath, walk, play, and hold them not the hands that “hurt’ and torment them. I live in a small town and we have thought about opening a Pitt/Rottie resuce Shelter, but I am not knowledealbe enough on how to get started. i would aslo love to get involved in the org…DogCatemy, so if you have any info or any kind to send me I would love it. I must say that now I am the proud owner of 2 Rottie mixes named “CAPONE and NESS….they are awsome!

Hey, if you ever want Isaboo’s portrait painted, send me an email and I will happily oblige, that is what I do for extra income. Have a great day Rach and thanks for speaking out for Pits!

I have been hunting all over for some cookbooks my Grandmother left behind to my mom. I have some of the series of Better Homes and Gardens , All Time Favorites, cookbooks. The publishing date is from 1978. I have tried to contact Meridith Publishers, but their web page is very confusing. I do not know just how many books were in this series, but I feel I must be missing quite a few. The reason I write is to ask if you might be able to find out how many books were in the series and if you could find the books using your wonderful celebrity contacts. By the way, I loved your show today with the four gossip girls. I do not know if i could have gone more than a day myself. LOL

Rach I think you are great for advocating so much for Pitties. I do not own one but have lots of friends that do and the only thing vicious about these dogs is there tails and tongues. Of course he scares people but the only thing he would do to you is drown you in drool. Keep up the amazing work getting the word out and educating the public about the real truth about Pitties

Hi Rachael- From one pitbul lover to another, I LOVE that you use your pitbull as part of your logo & how you poblicly show your love for the breed. I have had two pits in my life unfortunatly have lost both my dogs, my condolences for the loss of your first, but am so grateful to have had them in my life! My first pit was found on the side of the road when I took him in I fell in love with the breed after that I just had to have another, my second was from a breeder. My second was with me when I had my first child. People used to say I was crazy to trust him with my son & I would tell them I trusted my dog around him more than most people.I see the love you have for your dog & I just wish other people could see what a wonderful & loyal breed they are. They really are just big mushes, if you raise and treat them right. More people should speak out against and stop the dog fighting, hate the deed not the breed. So many end up in shelters it is so sad. Shelter dogs really do make wonderful companions. All breeds deserve love! But it is so nice to see someone who is in the public eye not afraid to show people, I have a pit & I am proud of it. It’s this type of acknowledgement that might let people know they are not a mean breed there owners are. Just like any other pet, you show them love and they show you love in return. A dogs temperment is truly a reflection of there owner. Thank for your time.

Please you have to do a story on Vicks, he was wrong, just do the facts. Those poor dogs are being mistreated and seen as bad dogs in the public eye. Those people who mis-used these dogs are wrong and not the dogs themselves, you have such a strong public watching, that you have to comment on what is going on with our fellow animal population that is being mis-used by our so called American sports heroes. Please speak on your show! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!

I got in to watching you on 30 Min meals with my Mother in 2005 when she was ill with lung disease. She passed in Dec of 05 and it took me a while to tune back in. I couldnt really do anything that reminded me of the time I spent with my Mom. I recently started watching your new show at the home of a lady I private nurse for and really love it.
I am going thru a dilema of my own with a lovely Pit Bull ( Of course a generic term used by society ) named Lucy ( Who looks just like Isaboo) .
Lucy came to use in Aug..she was a gift to my son for his birthday. She is absolutley wonderful, But unfortunetly I found out recently that I have to give her up due to insurance reasons. The owner of my home happens to be my oldest brother and he took over the deed after mom passed and we both share the responsibilities of the up keep and care of this home, but the insurance companies in my area wont insure a home if there is a “Bully Dog ” on the property and I cant afford to move elsewhere. My brother is scared that someday he would be liable if something happend..such as a dog bite, etc. I tried to reassure him that Lucy is a safe dog and a loveable dog and I keep her behind a 6 foot solid fence. He still wont hear my words or understand. He is adement that I get rid of the dog. He tells me that he doesnt want to see her go to the pound, but I have to find a place for her now. There is no talking to him. He wont change insurance companies to one who does not discriminate against certain breeds of dogs. He doesnt understand when I tell him how hard it is to properly place a dog like Lucy. You have to be very careful of where you place a “Pit Bull” because of the Michael Vicks of the world. Ive looked high and low and searched everywhere in So Ca for a Pit Bull rescue and found a few but they cant help me or havent contacted me yet. *Shrugs* I dont know why.

Lucy is such a wonderful girl who loves to play with my cat and watch the birds eat out of her dog food dish. She has that sly smile when she wants something and she is so loving and has a weird since of humor. She is just a 5 month od baby that I fell in love with and I am heartbroken. My time is running out and I fear hers is too.

I cry everytime I run across a website that advocates dogs like Lucy only because I know that the people that need to see these sites arent looking for them. They only see the negative press.
Im so lost about what to do.
    ~Rebecca~

She works diligently to place every dog with the best match possible. I would like to somehow help her cause by finding a food source since she does all care herself. Any contact information you may be able to provide would be appreciated.

I love your show, and watch everyday. I am also a huge dog lover and enjoy all animal related stories, but I am disappointed any time you mention botox. Wether you are or aren’t considering the procedure, you should research the testing they do on dogs. Every batch of botox is tested on dogs before being sent out for public consumption. Dogs are being tortured and are slowly dying from botox. Levels that are too dangerous are paralizing these poor creatures and they are unable to breathe and slowly die a horrible death. It breaks my heart everytime I hear the word botox, and I am hoping that you being a celebrity can bring some national attention to this subject.

I have this love and respect for this breed. Though we get stares and people just hate these dogs, they don’t get the education or the time to know these dogs. My huisband is in the military (USMC) and befeore he left to Iraq he bought me a pitbull and I Feel in LOVe. Now we own two. People that meet our dogs are amazed on how well they behave with people and other dogs. They can’t believe that they are “normal” When in trully they are just like anyother breed, and any dog can be mislead to be agressive, but pitbulls have taking all the blame when in trlly it’s all on who raises them. I am very paasionate about this subject and when i saw what happene in that Micheal case I wanted to kick him in the nuts….I am so glad that you did a show on Pitbulls and maybe it educated people a little more. You two with your Isaboo is a great pic. I watched your show this morning about the dogs saved from the dog fighting rings. You said the are not bad dogs just bad people. 2 years ago our dog Casper was run over by our mail man drug 20 yards stuck under the car the left for dead on the side of our driveway. he did not even stop to let us, this had happened. We know how far he was drug by the hide left on the ground. We barley had the funds but scrape up the almost 7,000.00$ to have him put back to as close to normaly as they could get. Then we packed up and moved 20 miles we thought to a different mail route. Well I guess ater our numerous complaints he was moved to a new mail route guess what ours. With in a week of living in our new house I received a letter from the mail man and it said how many BAD dogs do you have? I wrote him back and said “There are no bad dogs just mean people!” I truely believe this and hope all mean people get what the deserve. The dogs have no choice. Needless to say our mail 2years later is still all messed up if we get it at all.

Thanks for your love and support to those who can not defend themdelve.

I am such a fan. The only thing I like more than your recipes is the work you do to educate people about pit bulls. I loved the show about how BAD RAP rehabilitated and found homes for the abused pits found at Michael Vick’s home. My last pit was a rescue who had been abused. My husband was nervous about having a pit bull that had been physically mistreated, but she was just so thankful and forgiving and willing to move on to bigger and better things. They really have the most wonderful personality. Thank you for the work you do.

  123. Rachel,

I am a pit bull owner as well and appreciate the manner in which you shared their story and focused on how wonderful these little angels truly are. It is very rare that pits receive positive press, so thank you for that!
    Sincerely,
    Pit Bull Lover

    Hi Rach,
I love the show. I was so happy to see the pit bull story. I have been following the story thru Best Friends they recieved 22 of the “victory dogs”. The work they do at best friends is amazing. Please check out their web site http://www.bestfriends.org They are also one of the largest no kill sanctuaries.

  125. Rachel, Thanks for the awesome segment on Michael Vicks dogs! Not many people have the guts to stand up for this breed! I’ve been in rescue 2 years and the things people do to these animals is cruel, horrific and completely unacceptable! I have 4 female pits and always a foster or 2. I love your show and I’ve never been more proud knowing these dogs have such awesome support and love!!!To all the rescues, keep fighting the fight!!

I was so happy to see your episode on the rescue of the American Pit Bull Terriers. I have a red nose named Bella. Our Petsmart loves her. Everytime we go there the vet always comes out and talks to us. All the employees know her by name and she loves them all. It is just so crazy everytime someone asks what she is even if they are down petting her, and I say that she is an APBT they will immediatly jump up and back away. I just think it is so very sad that the whole breed is punished for the action of a few PEOPLE. These dogs are not born mean, or breed to be mean, they are trained to be mean. The whole reason that they were used for fighting in the first place was because they are so loyal to their owners. How many dogs can you fully engage in a fight and then reach in and seperate them without the chance of getting bitten? That should let you know how loyal these animals are. There are countless stories of APBTs giving their life for their owners. This is a very majestic breed and a very beautiful breed if you will just give them the chance. My Bella is the best thing that has happened to me. She is my very best friend. I love her dearly.

  127. Rachael, i know what a softie you are when it comes to animals, me too. rach, there are so many animals, dogs and cats out there that need homes, what about your showing a different dog or cat on your show and tell what shelter or rescue group it comes from. it might take 5 min. but would do a world of good, as far as getting animals adopted.

I hope you see my response, but I just wanted to thank you for all that you do for our pets. Especially pitt bulls! I saw where you had gotten emotional talking about it on your show the other day and it moves me. Nobody seems to understand how great they are! I have a beautiful blue nosed pitt bull named Jake, he will be a year and six months on March 9,2008. He is the most wonderful loving dog. He takes good care of me! I think he would really like Izaboo too!! ;)My mom still has never seen him because she is to scared and says they are mean. It upsets me to hear people talk and say how they all should be put down. I live in New Albany, Indiana and have lived in my home for about a year now. Once people found out my dog was a pitt bull, I had nowhere to go. I got kicked out of my current residence and had to find somewhere to go if I didnt get rid of him.(ONLY because he is a pitt bull.) Man was that tough. People would laugh at me and call me crazy when I called about a house, it became very frustrating. It finally all worked out which is great, but it made me realize that something has to be done. And I praise you for what you are doing and being a voice that alot of people look up to and you are voiceing out about these wonderful animals.
    With Love,
    Sarah and Jake ;)

    Rachel,

I just want to thank you for being such an advocate for Pit Bulls. My husband and I did a lot of research on them when we found out that our 4 year old rescue dog was part pit and part lab. She is a wonderful dog. We fell in love with the pit breed. We found a local breeder and visited annouced and unannouced to make sure the animals were being treated well and not being bred for fighting. We fell in love with the breeder and all of her dogs. At the same time we were trying to decided if we wanted to start a family or get a new puppy. So we started trying to start a family and kept getting disappointed. So, we went to the breeder and decided on a beautiful blue nose blue brendle pit. He was so cute. We could not wait to bring him home. We would go visit him every week after he was born, waiting for the day he got to come home. In the mean time we also found out that we were expecting. What timing. Once we brought him home he was the light of our household. He got along great with our other dog and 2 cats. He was home with me all day, for I own my own insurance business. Everywhere I went so did he. He just turned 8 months old last week and just yesterday we were told by some neighbors that if he was outside again they would shoot him. This is the same neighbor that owns a rotweiler. Busta, our pits name, loved people, kids, cats, and most of all life. He did not have a mean bone in his body. We worked with him from the time he came home not to bite, growl, or be ruff. We would pull his tail while eatting and playing with his toys to get ready for baby. But when the neighbors said what they did, I could not let that happen. We live in a neighborhood and do not have a very big yard. So fencing it in was not an option. We called our breeder and she agreed to take him back. We returned him today to her and that is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. My baby is due any day and I have had to get rid of my other baby to protect him. I write you just to say thank you! We need more people in this world showing everyone that pits are not mean, it is all in how you raise them. Although, Busta no longer lives with us our breeder is going to keep us up to date on how he is doing. They have decided to keep him as their house dog. He is such an awesome dog! He will always be our dog and a shining light in our home that will be missed forever! I just wish the perception of pits were different. They are the most loving dogs I have ever been around and I grew up with dogs. Thank you again for mentioning them and loving them publicly so others can see that they are not all bad. I will always miss my Busta, but I know he will be happier where he is because he can run and play without someone wanting to kill him.

    Thanks,
    Kassie

  130. Hi Rach,
I love the fact of the no kill shelter. I also love your picture with Isaboo. I have two Rottis and I know what it’s like for everyone to think your dog is a killer when he’s a big sweet gentle baby. People just dont get it, it’s how they are raised. There are people who get Rottis and Pits because they’re strong and loyal and will fight to the death and in return for their spectacular qualities they use them and make them mean. You can make any dog mean if you mis-treat them. I think people should have background checks and be licensed to own Rottis and Pits. Then the people who go through all of that are people who truly want the dog and will love them and take care of them. You have to get background checks to own a gun, licensed to drive a car. If you adopt a child you are checked in everyway. So why do we not take the same care with the animals?Very honestly, my Rottis have more integrity and loyalty than most human beings I’ve ever known. I’d rather spend my time with them than alot of people. It’s time we start making animal abuse a felony in this country. We need to start locking people up and punishing them the sameway they punish the animals instead of doing absolutely nothing. There is a fabulous organization I belong to called The Animal Legal Defense Fund. These lawyers defend animal abusers. Thank God people are finally starting to step up and are going to legally punish animal abusers. I love hearing you talk about Isaboo. Bring her on the show with you. She can be your cooking assistant. I love you and I love your show. You’ve got me loving to cook again. I’ll see you tomorrow at 9:00 AM on Channel 14. I look forward to your show every morning. I can’t get my day started without it. Thanks for all you do for us girls and for the animals.

  132. Hi Rachael
First i want to say i love your show. I didn’t think it could get any better, until I saw ” cooking for your pets” show. Whoo Hoo, as a pet sitter I’am always making yummy treats for my four legged clients. Pupcakes with cream cheese topping, fruit salads with yogurt & honey dressing and of course Ice Cream for cool summertime treats.

Your show got even better when i saw Miss Isaboo. She is just one of the cutest pitty girls around. I also own pits (all rescued).
My boys Dude & Capone ( Red Nose pits) also enjoyed your show. I think they have a crush on Miss Isaboo..LOL

I just wanted to say paws down you are “AWESOME”

    A fan forever.

He is so sweet and lovable and I,m glad you show the public that they are great dogs. I think you are wonderful in every way and I enjoy watching you and trying all of your wonderful recipes and I look forward to trying out the dog recipes. Rachel,
I just saw your episode on “cooking for your dog.” We all love our dogs, they are family. Because of that, I think it is very wrong that you mentioned putting garlic in a recipe and breezing over the fact that it is “controversial,” and check your breed guidelines. Anything in the allium family–mostly onions, but garlic is in there too–can cause a very toxic blood problem in dogs–period–no breed specifics about it. You may have not had a problem, but people who follow you might be poisoning their believed pets. As a dog biscuit baker I take this issue very seriously, and, if an ingredient is “controversial,” I think you, as a role model, owe it to pet owners to simply avoid ANY item in question–do you want to find out the hard way that you were wrong? I’d like to see make a public announcement about it and try to correct your error so dogs stay healthy.

I must admit that I have never watched your show..I don’t watch much television. Someone emailed me the segment you did with Johnny Justice and the lady from Bad Rap. I was moved to tears. As a Pit Bull owner and advocate for the breed, I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart! I have been involved with Pit Bull rescue for 5 years now and it is not an easy task with BSL popping up everywhere and the bad press pit bulls get. If you ever get the chance it would be wonderful if you could do a segment on BSL. I am now a devoted fan of you and your show. You ROCK!

  147. Hi Rachael,
I am so glad that you own a pitbull and promote them in a postive way. So many people have the wrong idea about these dogs. The media makes them out to be such monsters, when they are really sweet loving dogs. I breed pitbulls. I would love for you to attend a dog show sometime if you can ever get away from your busy schedule. Oh and I am a big fan of yours and always have been. I love the show on food network where you go out and eat on a budget that show is fab ! Good luck in all your future endeavors !

    Hi Rachael,

I love your show, it rocks..I just got into wanting to learn to cook, sad huh? lol..I just wanted to thank you for standing up for the pit bulls, and loving them..The tears are rolling down my cheeks as I write this…I had a pitbull named Sadie, she looked exactly like your dog, but she was lighter in color.. She was my baby, spoiled rotten, and so smart..She was gentle and even grandma loved her..she was just 2 and a half, somewhat still a pup to me..Jan 9th 2007 I slipped in a store and fell..Long story short, I went to the er for x rays…Three hours later I was still there, and my older sister and her son came to the E.R…..They had been crying.. My sister took my mothers hand and said” Mom I dont know how to tell you this, but your house just burned down.”then she looked at me and said “Sis I’m so sorry we couldnt get sadie out!!!!” My heart died right there in that E.R….Its been a year since I lost her to the fire, but my heart still feels like it was yesterday…..Mom got me min pin (small dobberman) In case anything else happend they could get her out…I love her, but its not the deep love and connection I had with Sadie..She’d crawl up in my lap when she wanted a kiss and lay her face and muzzle right on my lips til I gave her all the kisses she wanted..
Well thanks for the ear, and thanks for loving the breed..I really want another one, but I cant find any good breeders…oh and thanks for teaching me how to cook..love Mary

Actually this is about one of your shows that I recently saw and do not know how to find the right responding point. I watched the show of the animal shelter that burned down and was devistated by it. Recently a friend of mine lost his dog of 12 years and another friend posted this poem. I thought it would be good to pass it on:

    The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
    The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group,
flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

  152. Rach,

I just wanted to say that I think what you have done not only with your shows and magazine are wonderful, but also for the dogs in the world are wonderful. Isaboo is lucky to have parents like you and John. I have lost several pets in my life and so I started a website for people to post memorials for free for pets and humans. Anyone is welcome to post a memorial and the site is located at http://www.angel-hearts.org. I have lost three dogs since Oct 2006, the last one being Jan. 14th this year. I hope that anyone that wishes to post a memorial will feel free to do so for a pet or human. Bless you Rach for all you do for us. Caring paws, Nancy

    Hey Rach,

Have just started today reading your blog, pretty cool site, keep up the Great work you are doing on being an Advocate for the Pit. Your Izzboo looks just like my Marla, she is only 4 months old but a Very smart and loving companion. I just purchased another, he is 7 weeks old and a bundle of Joy. I hate to see the bad rap that these enjoyable and loving pets get. The Michael Vick story had me in tears, and when I started telling my husband about it, the tears came back again and I couldn’t hardly tell him. I love my pits, and it is terrible in a Free society that I have to keep them under wraps. There is a pit safety law in our community, we have to carry 150,000.00 insurance policy that is an extra add on to our home owners policy. What is so bad is this can be any breed of dog! Sure these are a powerful breed, its just a small handful of Non law abiding citizens that make them bad. Please keep up the good work at helping these loving animals get what is due to them. They are great companions. If ya need any help, I am very willing to help in the campaign. Give your loving babies a hug and kiss from Marla and baby Max.
    Love Ya Girl!!!!

  155. Now as to the letter on march 14th by leslie, she needs to get her facts straight and appologize to you. After I read the article I called my vet and he said garlic in small amounts won’t hurt any animal. He said the garlic helps to prevent fleas. I fed it to my dogs and it never hurt them any. I didn’t give them a whole lot of it. If I was cooking and used it they got some of what I was cooking. Keep up your good work on the show and take care of that beautiful baby of yours(izzaboo). She is a very beautiful dog. Again thank you for being you. Love Ya C.J.

One with recipes that are healthy for what dogs need everday, a book that has recipes that are researched and vet approved with the right amount of protein, fat, carbs, vitamins and minerals.
