Design On A Dime, NYC Style

You can check out what Evette is doing by joining her facebook page or following her on twitter!

Springtime is the perfect time of year to make some additions (and in my case LOTS of subtractions, I am a bit of a pack rat!) to your décor. So every spring I love to head to the Design on A Dime fundraiser for Housing Works of NYC. Housing Works is an organization that does tons of outreach to the homeless living on New York City Streets and especially those living with AIDS. God bless these folks! They also run a few premier thrift shops around town and since they are extremely picky about the donations they take so there are tons of top notch furnishings at rock bottom prices. Gotta Love that!

At Design on A Dime, top Designers from all over NYC use Housing Works thrift store products to create fantastic rooms on little more than a dime. Everything in each installation can be bought right off the floor and the proceeds go to supporting Housing Works incredible work. I am always so inspired by all of the awesome work of my fellow designers. Here are a few things that really caught my eye!

Money grew on trees at this year’s event. I couldn’t believe how simple and beautiful this idea was…I am definitely going to use this one at the next wedding or fundraiser I plan, just pin the money onto ribbons hanging from a tree.

I loved this yellow and teal color combo by the editors of Real Simple magazine. I also thought the peacock feather wallpaper, such a simple pattern that really makes a statement!

Design by Joshua used shelf brackets in a really interesting way. They lined them next to one another to make a simple makeshift shelf. With the right anchors used for your walls, these brackets are strong enough to hold even the heaviest displays.

Ty Pennington had a really fun installation for Sears.

Here is a photo of me, Ty, and my pals, interior designer Thu Do (who created the Obama-rrific room at the top of my blog) and furniture designer Tucker Robbins

This is a great way to create interesting table décor, check out this simple monochromatic display by Huniford Design Studio. What I love about this idea is that you can get one bottle of spray paint and paint a bunch of different and interesting objects in the same color for instant impact!

I loved this wingback chair upholstered in contrasting colors, cream and bright orange, like a delicious creamsicle

Country Living Home Décor Collection displayed art in a really cool way by sticking them all in the corner. It’s a sure fire way to make your ceilings seem taller!

I could not get over how beautiful this vinyl and brocade fabric was, this piece adds instant wow, but maybe a bit much with my leopard print dress.

Designer Luis Caicedo did some really neat things in his room, including creating a bed that has a built in table behind it, which I thought would be great for a kids room, where the table could be used as a desk and simple shelving made from threaded pipes and planks of wood.

The evening was capped off with a nice heart to heart with Jaclyn Smith, my favorite of Charlie’s Angels. Her new furniture line at Kmart includes this cool upholstered headboard and some nicely scaled pieces that would look great even in small NYC apartments.

  1. I don’t know how to get this question answered. If you could please forward it to the appropriate person on the RR show, I would appreciate it.

Just curious where a person can find decorating ideas that Rachael does on her show? on her website? For example, last week, there was a segment decorating a tiny apartment. At the end of the segment, the decorating person showed how to make floating shelves for living room — for figurines, books, etc.

Is there somewhere on the website for non-cooking segments aired on the show. Can’t find it.

    Thanks
    Christine Kuch-Hailstone

I didn’t know anything about Housing Works. . . nice to have a little good news. The color at the Design on a Dime event just seems to jump off the page–so clear and clean it sends out energy waves.

I still can’t figure out how you know all these good causes to support, Evette. I know all of us have to kind of pick our battles these days. It looks to me like you look for creativity and, whether its people or animals, the capacity to love and surprise. Thank you, too, for being interested in public schools and the teachers who work there and the students. I worry so much about whether elementary school students have computer access. More and more homework assignments assume it exists and sometimes that assumption is, well, heartbreaking. If I got a chance to “fix” education, I wouldn’t do it with scholarships for colleges, I’d try to make sure that students had some access to Wikopedia. So much homework assumes kids have a parent at home helping them learn, and if parents are working double shifts or opposite shifts, that’s not true.
