Daytime Host Launches “Mutt Madness” to Find the Neediest and Most Deserving Pet Charities in America
Star Studded Panel of Pet Lovers Including Kathy Griffin and Beth Ostrosky Stern Will Choose the Initial 64 Candidate Organizations
NEW YORK, NY AUGUST 6, 2009 – Daytime television host and best selling author Rachael Ray is looking for a few good pets become the beneficiaries of more than $200,000 in proceeds from the sale of her NutrishÔ pet food. Starting today she will launch the first ever “Mutt Madness Awards Program” to find the most deserving charitable organizations in America, which have demonstrated exceptional commitment to pet rescue, rehabilitation or adoption.
Charities, with 501(c)(3) status that employ no-kill practices, can go to www.rachaelray.com/muttmadness and fill out a questionnaire about their organization, the work they do and why they should be considered for a Mutt Madness Award. The submission process will close on September 30, 2009 when Rachael will convene a star-studded panel of animal lovers to narrow the field down to the top 64 candidate organizations. Panel members include; Double Emmy winner and Grammy nominated Chicago native Kathy Griffin, author, model and animal rights advocate Beth Ostrosky Stern, one of New York magazine’s “Best Vets,” Dr. Peter Harris Kross and of course, Rachael herself.
“We are so excited to launch ‘Mutt Madness,’ which we know is going to be an amazing way to build awareness around the great people and organizations out there that do everything they can to protect and care for animals,” said Rachael. “I started Rachael Ray Nutrish with Ainsworth Pet Nutrition to not only provide a great and healthy pet food to consumers, but as a way to raise funds that can be used to help pets in need. Mutt Madness is now our vehicle to spread the wealth around.”
Once the 64 are chosen and announced they will be randomly assigned spots in the Mutt Madness brackets and receive $1000.00. In the first round, charities will be judged head-to-head by visitors to the site with the charities receiving the most votes moving on to the next level. The winners of each pairing will be announced and the Mutt Madness field will be cut from 64 to 32.
Charities will receive an additional $1000 donation every time they win their pairing and move on to the next round. Four more rounds of match-ups and voting will take place before there are two charities are left standing. The final voting showdown is worth a donation of $25,000 to the second place finisher and $50,000 to the grand award winner, which will be announced in early December.
In 2008, Rachael partnered with Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, a company formed by Dad’s Pet Care and Hampshire Pet Products, to develop a line of super premium dog food and treats called Rachael Ray™ Nutrish. Rachael’s proceeds from each sale have been donated to support Rachael’s Rescue (www.rachaelsrescue.org), which is dedicated to helping at-risk animals through adoption, medical care and educational programs, along with training and outreach initiatives.
Rachael Ray Nutrish includes two varieties of natural dog food featuring real meat as the first ingredient – Real Chicken and Veggies and Real Beef and Brown Rice. There are no by-products, fillers, artificial flavors or preservatives.

Hi Rachel. Just wanted to let you know that my little schnauzer and my mutt cat love your Nutrish. My cat waits till my dog is finished and then he goes over and finishes it off. He is really a finicky cat so this makes me happy that he does this. My little dog thinks it is also treats. I give them to her instead of the fattening treats. So thanks so much for making this food. I only bought a sample and have just sent my hubby to the store to buy a bag of it. thanks again for making this food for my pet. She thanks you toooooooooo!

Rachael, I’m writing to make a plea to your love of animals to help me out with a financial problem and our cat, Sandy. She’s a beautiful short hair calico that needs extensive dental surgery. She needs extratcions and scrappings. Her gums are infected. However, she’s 15 years old, has a heart murmur and takes daily medication for a thyroid condition. She also needs a special diet for a urine problem. Because of her medical problems it is recommended that she have pre-surgery tests. Over-all the cost of the whole procedure will be over $1000. My husband and I are retired and live on SS and my pension. We really do not have the extra money for Sandy’s operation at this time. Could you please denote money to Pitman Animal Hospital in Sandy’s name to pay for her surgery. If you can you help at all please call me at 856-589-8498. Thank you, Claire

Hi Rachael, On Tuesday I had to have my 2 yearold kitty (Sugar) put to sleep. My family would love to get another one but not sure what to do about the dog. When we got Hershey,we had all ready had Sugar. How would you go about interducing a new kitty to the dog? Should we get a kitty or an adult cat? I would love to hear your opion. Pics of my animals are on facebook please take a look. Thank you, Sara

Well I’m a owner of a 4yr pit bull named Scrappy. I’m so very upset because I’ve had her since she was a pup she even survived being ran over then backed up over, she came out of it with just limp front right paw, now I may have to take her to the pound where I know she will probably end up well you know.. Because in Erie PA most places that allow pets do not allow pits. I wish more people would get involved and get the word out to make people aware it is not the breed any animal can be vicious depending on the owner and how they raise and train them. I just want to cry knowing that I may have to give up the only member of my family, because of discrimination….

This will be fun! My rescue dog loves Nutrish, and I’m going to make sure everyone I know votes for CompAnimals! Thanks Rachael for doing this!!

What a great contest. I hope that in the future you will consider non-profit organizations that are not considered “No kill”. Unfortunately it is a sad reality in many parts of the country, but that doesn’t mean our programs are not fantastic or deserving of recognition. For example, our shelter has a program that delivers dog and cat food to companion animals of elderly and shut-ins. No one should have to choose between feeding themselves or their companion animal. Thanks for all you do for our four legged friends.
08.10.09 @ 3:40 pm
What a wonderful donation! I’m wondering, though, why it is only open to limited admission shelters? There are some wonderful shelters whose doors are open to all animals in need who are doing great, progessive work. It would be so helpful to explain to people what “no kill” really means.

Dear Rachel:
I am one of the 2 Directors for the Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation (MCABSL). As you know, Miami~Dade County has had a ban on Pit Bulls and Stafforshire Terriers since 1989. Our organization has challenged this ordinance and has won on several occassions. We are filing suit to permanently remove this inhumane ordinance. We also provide legal remedy and counsel for Pit owners whose dogs have been red flagged by the county and are in danger. Thru our members network we pull dogs out of shelters, take in strays, vet them, transport them out of the county when needed, hold events so these dogs can come out of hiding into another county and generally… it’s an all around animal advocacy group focusing on these specific breeds/mixes and fighting BSL.
Our fight is costly but well worth it, as Miami is the stronghold for BSL in the nation. When this ordinance is repealed….it will trigger a domino effect and other BSL counties and states will follow.
I cannot express how important your support for our cause and fight means.
Please log onto unitedagainstbsl.org to check us out.
On behalf of all the BSL fallen angels…
In Hope and Commitment,
Dahlia
Director for MCABSL

Hi Rachael, Are you limiting your contest only to dogs? One of my favorite charities which is desparate for funds is http://www.hawkewildlife.org. It is a non profit professional wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Elkton, Florida. It receives no state or federal funding. Due to the record cost of food and gas doubling in price, HAWKE needs funds to make it through the summer. Please visit the website for more information. Thanks for caring about our wonderful wildlife and all animals.

Hi Rachel,
As a professional dog trainer, former vet tech, owner of a petsitting and training business, long time rescue volunteer, and contractor for our local Humane Society, I have to say that I’m terribly disappointed in your exclusion of open-admission shelters from eligibility for your contest. “No-Kill” shelters are not always what you’d envision. Languishing in a cage for a lifetime can be a fate worse than death, and adopting out dangerous dogs is just irresponsible. The shelter I work with does euthanize dogs who are aggressive, dangerous to people, or who have major health problems that can’t be dealt with, however, they adopt out far more animals than they euthanize, and are actively working on “getting to zero”, through education, outreach, medical care availability and active work with the shelter dogs to make them more adoptable. We take the dogs that the no-kill shelter won’t take, fix them if possible, and find them homes, while the same dogs languish for years in the no-kill facility. In the end, which work is more humane, and which benefits more animals? I’ll leave that for you to decide.
08.20.09 @ 6:43 pm
Rachel-
I applaud you for your efforts to protect the animals. Your heart is in the right place. I only hope that if you run this contest again that you will allow ALL shelters to participate. Many shelters will promote themselves as No-Kill, but that can sometimes be a half truth. Many “no-kill” shelters will adhere to that statement when it comes to animals they deem “adoptable”. Those that are sick/injured or aggressive will be put down.

Dear Rachael,
I wanted to let you know how much I admire your dedication and passion towards dogs. It is amazing to hear about all of the wonderful things you do for rescue organizations. I am writing to you today from
Toronto, Ontario, Canada. For the past week, our local news media has been covering the story of a
cream coloured Chow dog. He is probably the worst
case of neglect that anyone has every seen. His story has really touched my heart because he reminds me of my own cream Chow who passed away two years ago at the age of 15.
I don’t know if your organization can do anything for him financially since we are in Canada, but I am sending you the websites so that you can read the stories about him and I am sure you will remember him forever.
Thank you,
Karen Adames

I’m very confused about registering our MinPinRescue for Mutt Madness. The instructions indicate that an authorized representative of the rescue can submit the registration form. However, the form, itself, states the an “employee” must submit the form. There’s not a rescue organization, that I’m aware of, that pays employees. Most rescues are all volunteer efforts.
PLEASE explain before the Mutt Madness deadline!!

Hi,
I run a small bully breed rescue and am involved in legislation. I am a one-woman operation and have never bothered to file the tax documents…it has never been about money.
Though I highly doubt that me and my ever evolving band of pitties would qualify for the contest, I was just curious if perhaps there was a way to maybe receive food donations for them.
I take on dogs with special needs most of whom do not fare well on low quality food. I have had to turn away dogs recently due to the extreme expense of just food and vet care.
I am pleased to see that the spokes dog is a pittie…Just wondering if you’d consider helping out?

Dear Rachel, On behalf of all the dedicated volunteers of the Mid Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue Organization, thank you for the numerous and creative ways you have enhanced awareness and embraced positive solutions for animal protection and rescue! We applaud your efforts and are proud to join with you in saving lives and enabling happy, healthy, and loving relationships for our beloved rescue dogs and their new “furever” families. We would like to apply and be considered in your exciting Mutt Madness contest, but are wondering if we qualify as we do not employ staff but are fully volunteer driven. We look forward to learning of our application status, and thank you once again for your exceptional generosity and kindness! Best wishes, Sharon Yateman, MAESSR Volunteer

Hello Rachel,
What a great contest. I support Hands for Paws out of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Ginny Cornett does an amazing job rescuing abandoned dogs and cats from the beaches of Puerto Rico. She does a lot, but there is a lot more to be done and funds needed to continue the group’s efforts.
Hands for Paws is an amazing group of dedicated people rescuing one four legged friend at a time.
09.03.09 @ 2:46 pm
The decision to limit this contest to “no-kills” is very discouraging to those of us who actually save far more animals than any no-kill can but are excluded because we have to perform euthanasia due to the many irresponsible people out there who cannot treat their pets properly or humanely. It would be far better to educate them rather than punish by exclusion the thousands of animal shelters that have to fight misinformation by well-intended people as well as the actions of those who are inhumane. In the current economic downturn, we are the ones dealing with the animals forced from their homes, those organizations which take all animals, not the no-kills which choose which (adoptable) animals they will help. I hope you’ll consider helping those who help all animals in the future.
09.12.09 @ 12:51 pm
Rachel,
I volunteer for an extremely needy shelter in Puerto Rico. We have THE cutest dogs but can’t enter Mutt Madness because we just can’t be a no-kill shelter. We would LOVE to be a no-kill shelter, but we don’t have enough food for everyone and it would be more cruel to starve anyone. Can you imagine how painful it is to have to decide who goes? PLEASE help us!!! See us at http://www.viequeshs.org.
Thank you,
Nancy

Dear Rachael,
I have a story I would like to share with you. I have a bichon frise (Bichonni) he is the love of my life. He will be 14 years old on May 15. He was diagnosed as a diabetic over 3 years ago. A lttle over a year ago I rescued a maltise, what a god sent.
He has made such a difference in our lives but, most of all in Bichonni’s. Since we have (Jasper) Bichonni’s insulin amount has decreased and he is so much happier. He has a best friend and playmate. I absolutly love and adore animals. If I could I would adopt them all. I was thrilled when you came out with your line of dog food. Bichonni and Jasper love it, treats and all. Take Care Love Laurie

There is no such shelter that is a no kill shelter it only means that they are not put to sleep in that shelter but are put to sleep somewhere else like at the Vet. or another shelter or many other different places. So if you ever here of a No Kill Shelter that just means that they are put to sleep somewhere else and that is what a No Kill Shelter is. So really it is a no kill shelter, because they are not puting the animals to sleep at there shelter but are taken somewhere else to be put to sleep. Allot of people think that there is such a place like this but it’s not true but it one since it is a no kill shelter but it’s just because the animals are not Euthanized at that shelter, so that is what a No Kill Shelter really is. This may sound like I’m trying to be mean but I’m not trying to, but I’m just explaining what it really means when people here of a No Kill Shelter but I wished it was so, but it’s not, Thanks.

Hi Rach and everyone out there! I’m just sending a kick note to thank Rachel and her site for all the great info (links, etc.) they have posted about Pit Bulls. I am the proud human of Daisy Mae and she is one of the sweetest, most loving dogs I’ve had. She has been in a Cutest Dog Competition and it has made me really realize what a bad rap Pits get, they are wrongly judged even when it comes to cute picture contest! I would love to share pictures of my Daisy Mae if anyone is interested. Let me know!

Thank you for what you do on behalf of pets waiting for furrever homes. With the economic situation affecting so many families. There are many that are forced to give up their furry family members. This is so sad. When going through a crisis, the one famiily member that we turn to is our pet. Giving them up gives up a piece of ourselves. God Bless you for reaching out. I am a volunteer with a new effort in Minneapolis to help those in crisis KEEP pets they might otherwise be forced to give up. We collect pet food and supplies to be distributed among local food shelves that meet human need. Our founder, Kim Carrier, is actively seeking non profit status and we anticipate being able to participate in your contests in the future. In the meantime, PAWS UP! for what you are doing to help pets. While it is true that we cannot save them all, we can save one at a time. Never, ever give up. Rachael,
I am writing on behalf of my great niece (Laura) who lives in South Padre Island, TX. She had a beautiful and gentle Pitbull named Cooper. He just recently fathered some pups. Luckily!!
There was a tragedy down there recently. I am attaching the letter Laura wrote about what happened. She is sending this letter to all the radio, TV and newspapers down in “The Valley”, TX to see if anyone can help to get some justice.
The reason I am writing is I need your help in contacting whoever about some justice in the animal world. Do you know of some people that can help with this. I think when animals are murdered, people should be sentenced just as if it were a human. So far the only thing that has happened is the guy lost his weapons permit. Here is the letter:

Coopers Last Day
Category: Pets and Animals
I am writing this because I want justice for my dog Cooper. On September 14th at approximately 1:00 a.m. my dogs were let out of my dad’s truck at the Galleon Bay Club condos to go to the restroom. My father, sister, brother-in-law, nephew, boyfriend and I had just got back from a long night at the beach, and we were transporting coolers and other beach supplies to my Jeep as well as my puppy ….Paris…. and her father Cooper.
Cooper was an 8 year old North American Pitbull Terrier who was an important and much loved member of my family, as well as whomever he came in contact with. He was well trained, obedient, and well mannered. He loved and protected children, elderly, friends, and family. While my dad was loading stuff into the Jeep I was talking to my boyfriend I heard gunshots. At the time there was a party going on about three houses down. I figured, and hoped, it was coming from over there because I didn’t want to think something bad had happened to Cooper, but then I saw a couple standing at the corner of Laguna and Capricorn with a small dog standing behind them. I knew Cooper had gotten too close. Cooper was raised around many different dogs and was not aggressive to other dogs. In fact, he would make his own dog friends because he was so friendly and playful. My dad was already running over to Cooper and commanded him to “get back”. After the man fired three shots into the air Cooper was already retreating and with my dad’s command he picked up his pace and turned his back on the man. The gunman lowered his weapon while my dad was running towards Cooper who was 10 feet away, and fired four more times into Cooper’s back and stomach. I believe one shot was fired into his heart which killed him. My dad yelled, “Stop shooting”, and had to place himself between the gunman and Cooper. He had no fear for his life at the time but was concerned and in fear for Cooper’s life. By the time the gunman stopped firing he had only one bullet in the clip and one in the chamber, which means, if my dad had not risked his life and stepped in between the gunman and Cooper, he would have emptied his gun into Cooper. The gunman then turned and ran away into the ….Laguna.. ..Bay…. condos until police arrived. My dad and I loaded Cooper back into his truck because he started coughing and were trying to find a number to an emergency vet when the police arrived. The gunman was arrested, the gun confiscated, but then he was released 30 minutes later. Cooper had no bite or scratch marks, nor did those couples’ two dogs. This man was licensed to carry a handgun but I don’t believe he was adequately trained in gun safety. He took no consideration as he shot in the air and all over the street that this is a tourist attraction and an eventful location. He made no attempt to look for other people on the street or sidewalk and most importantly, children. In this area there are many bicyclists, skate boarders, roller bladders, and people who walk around to enjoy the island scenery. Not only did my father have to put himself between Cooper and the gunman but there very easily could have been a human casualty as well due to the negligent, thoughtless, cold blooded, and immature choices this man made. Hind sight is 20/20 and we realize that he should have had a leash on him in a leash zone for his own protection as well as what some would say “their protection”. I say “what some would say” because Cooper never hurt anyone. Regardless, I don’t feel that just because an animal is off a leash and friendly to others it should be gunned down and murdered. My dad said he saw Cooper standing next to that couples dogs and was sniffing them and the other dogs were snapping at him. After the gunman scared Cooper off with the first three shots in the air he retreated. Those people were never in any kind of danger, nor were there dogs, and especially not when my best friend was running for his life with his back turned towards the couple and responding to verbal commands. I have been crying all day every day, my other family members have too and I have nightmares that other people I love will be gunned down and murdered for no reason also. Today is Thursday and I still do not have the strength to write my witness statement. I know that the police down here don’t know how to deal with cases like this and my greatest fear is that Cooper, my best friend, will not get the proper justice he deserves. I held him in my arms that night until he was cold and stiff and then he was transported to ….Weslaco…. to be buried with past pets that actually had the chance to live a long and happy life. I have had Cooper since he was a puppy. I rescued him from certain and painful death he was destined to have in dog fighting, only to have him maliciously murdered. He is missed dearly by my entire family, my boyfriend’s family, and our extended family, as well as many friends. Even my parents’ other three dogs, including Cooper’s other daughter Bridget has been affected. They won’t eat or play, they only mope around the yard. I am hoping to get some help and piece of mind. I feel I have no options as we don’t have an SPCA to serve justice to not only Cooper, but other animals that are experiencing animal cruelty (dog fighting) or have already passed. Like Cooper. This was a hateful crime and Cooper deserves justice. He definitely did not deserve this cruel death. Please help all of us who are hurting and most importantly, Cooper. My family would like to thank all the support we have received and all the letters will be forwarded to Cooper.
Rest in Peace
Cooper

Hi, just discovered this venue. I have 2 “heart warmers” to report that should make all of us feel good.
Two years ago, after our local animal shelter quit subsidizing spay and neuter, three of us formed PAW, People for Animal Welfare. We started out just providing free spay or neuter for pets of low income people who qualified. Then we started a very low cost spay/neuter spring and fall clinic, and also provided shots for a very low copay. Long story short, in two years we have spayed or neutered over 2000 animals in a small mountain tourist town in New Mexico.
Secondly, a little over a year ago, we PAW people became aware of a massive cat hoarding situation of 135 cats. They had been abandoned and we were able to go to court, get custody of all the cats and in one day, spayed and neutered all 135. Needless to say, they were rescued from horrible conditions that I won’t even relate.
After the initial adoption of a small percentage of the cats, about 60%, the “leftovers” were a big question mark. What would we do with them ! As a result, a wonderful man nearby built an inside/outside shelter for the remaining kitties and KITTY CITY, NM was born!
Kitty City is a no-kill refuge where any cat or kitten can live as long as needed to find a forever home. If they are there for the rest of their lives, that will be fine. But, I am thrilled to report that in less than a year, Kitty City has placed over 280 cats and kittens in loving, forever homes. And whenever a cat is adopted, we go rescue cats on death row at animal control. People like the fact that when they adopt from Kitty City, they are really saving two cats…the one they take home and the one who is brought in to replace it. Also, it is wonderful for adoptive parents to come to Kitty City and adopt because when they leave with their cat, there is not the pressure and sadness of those left there because there is no deadline and no one is euthanized unless hopelessly ill or in severe pain. Never just for convenience or crowding.
All I can say is IT FEELS WONDERFUL ! God Bless all animals
10.16.09 @ 9:42 am
Oh, I forgot ! If you want to check out the wonderful, frontier KITTY CITY, go to www,kittycitynm.com Thanks and your support, wishes, prayers are appreciated.

Hello,
I tuned into todays Nov 10th show and I was brought to tears listening to the stories of the dogs that have been abused. I caught the tail end of a story about a pit bull who had cigarettes put out on him as a puppy and it made me sick to my stomach that someone could do this and brought me to tears. I have a year and a half old boxer named Higgins, who my husband and I love so much and could not bare the thought of him going through something like that. I got on the website to see what I could do to help and saw a picture of a boxer under the pet of the month of August 09 and he/she looked so similar to Higgins that I had to inquire about him/her. Has he/she been adopted? What is his/her story? I would love more info on the boxer. I have attached a picture of my husband and I with Higgins. We have been talking about adopting rescue boxer but want to make sure it will be a happy and healthy situation for Higgins, as we have had no problems with him. He is very friendly, outgoing, loving and non territorial. He is a sweetheart and we would want to make sure both dogs get along. Any info you could provide me would be wonderful! Thank you!

Dear Rach,
I am soooo sorry to hear about your beloved pet. Yes, people are predjustic toward pit bulls. I have known many who are big babies and couch potatoes. Hopefully, with as many fans as you have someone can take her in.
I got tears in my eyes when I read your comment.
Thanks for supporting such a good cause.

Hi Rachel,
I watch your morning show and saw what you did for the lady that rescues dogs. My neice Denise Hammond is an animal lover too, and has a business in Lawrenceburg Kentucky “All about Animals” She rescues dogs and cats (mostly dogs). She also grooms, gives shots boards and anything else she can legally do for animals. She also sells many animals products.
Last night she called me sobbing. Her new shop, she has been in just over a month, was burned totally with 30 dogs and all of her stock and records completely gone. She and her husband have put everything they had into this shop. They have several dogs at their home as well.
I hope you might be able to help her in this tragedy.
God Bless you for what you do.
Sincerely,
Gerry Hayes

Dear Rachael and Staff, I am normally working in the morning but happened to see your wonderful program today, Nov. 10, 2009. I am a person who can not stand to see an animal mistreated. God gave us precious babies to love and precious animals. All life is from God and to be protected. On our local news, Fox 8, WGHP-TV, High Point, NC, reported a story very similar to the lady’s in New Jersey. A lady in Charlotte, NC has a rescue as well and has been asked to do many updates and changes. She has many cats and dogs who are like her children, but as I understand the story, she is now in danger of losing them. What will happen to them, I am afraid to think. This story aired about a month or so ago. It has been on again, but I don’t know what is happening to the dear lady or her rescued animals. Her rescue is called Furball Rescue and is in, or near, Charlotte, NC. You can find out more information about this by contacting Fox 8 WGHP-TV, news at 336-275-1850. I am so thankful to have found an avenue to bring this story to someone’s attention who may be able to help.
If I could relate one more story which also aired on Fox 8 WGHP-TV, I would appreciate it. A lady who was struck by a hit and run driver some years ago is disabled. She is a grown woman now and had recently been able to get a companion dog to help her and to help protect her. Her companion dog was running off the leash to play near her apartment complex and was killed by a hit and run driver. She had only had him two months as it was hard for her to obtain him. She is alone again. This story broke my heart. I don’t know how much another companion animal would cost or what if anything anyone is doing to help this nice lady. She lives in Winston-Salem, NC. This story can also be looked into and followed up on by contacting Fox 8 WGHP-TV.
Thank you all for the wonderful work you are doing to help people and their animals.
God bless you all!

Dear Rachel I live in Grayson county Texas I saw a TV story about a animal rescue house here in Grayson county and they have about 300 rescued dogs on site as of 11/11/09. They are a non-profit and are in need of help. the lady that over sees the shelter said they are in need of food so naturally I thought about you and your new dog food. It would be great if you could look in to this and maybe donate ARF House some food.

Dear Rachael Ray and Staff ,
I just found your website and I want to help a gentleman who posted a comment on 8/7/09 at 2:45 AM by the name of Sam R. from Erie, PA.
Sam has (had) Scrappy, a 3 yr old pitbull. It sounded as if Sam may need to give Scrappy, “the only member of his family” to the pound because landlords in Erie discriminate against pitbulls. A very common happening due to widespread misinfornmation about pits, mainly fueled by irresponsible media looking for cheap ratings, and people who do not know how to, or do not bother to inform themself beyond the 5 o’clock news.
I am on the Board of Outreach to Pets in Need (OPIN) based in CT. OPIN is an all volunteer non-profit which was originaly created in 2007 to raise funds to finance innovative programs at the Stamford Animal Care and Control Shelter (SACC) when a new shelter manager came in with a refreshing view of what a municipal facility can be. SACC with the help of OPIN has had the highest adoption rate in CT (98%)for the last 3 years, handling about 85% pits Xs and moving about 400 animals/ yr (07 & 08) into well researched homes with good, pet educated guardians.
The OPIN Programs at the Shelter are established enought now to where OPIN is starting to expand to help pets beyond the Shelter, and that is the subject of my comment. I would advise Sam R. not to take Scrappy to the local pound if he has to give him up, or to retrieve him if he already did. If the Rachael Ray staff would be kind enought to pass along this message to him (including my contact info which you get when I submit this comment), I would be more than happy to talk with him about other options for Scrappy through OPIN.
I just hope, I am not too late. It is really not fair that responsible owners and their dogs have to suffer for the irresponsibility of others when we are all one.
I thank you in advance for the extra effort. I know you must receive thousands of messages every day.
Isabel M.

Dear Rachael,
I just finished watching the amazing story about Lisa and her rescue. We have someone in our town that is a lot like Lisa.
Josh Pasewaldt, owner of Newbury Park Pet Supply, has been working to save animals for the past 2 1/2 years. He has been making 2 weekly trips to Bakersfield that take him 2 hours to drive each way. He loads up his car and donated air-conditioned trailer with as many kennel carriers as he can fit. He goes to the Kern County Animal Shelter, that is a kill shelter, and adopts up to 40 dogs or cats each trip. He pays for the gas and adoption fee out of his own pocket! He brings these animals home to his store in Newbury Park and “re-homes” them. He just charges what the shelter charged him. He has a wonderful vet that has agreed to help him with the cost of shots and lower cost spay or neuter each of these animals before they go to their new homes. This amazing tender-hearted man has SAVED 2,578 animals in 2 1/2 years. I myself have adopted 2 wonderful animals.
Recent events are putting a hamper in his good intentions. Local high dollar pet stores complain to the newspapers that his is taking business away from him. They have called the city to complain he doesn’t have the proper license to run such a business. He has done all that has been asked of him. Upgraded the security system at the store. New kennels, high grade cleaning supplies and much more I don’t know about. Now the city is siting him for a new roof. He doesn’t make any money adopting out these animals. His lease is up in 18 months and with all these unforeseen fees and improvement charges we’re not sure he will stay in business. If you can help him in any way the community would sincerely appreciate it.
There is a man named Guy Shaw that is making it difficult for him to do these mass adoptions like he has been doing. This guy just wants to get his retirement in 8 months and isn’t concerned about the welfare of the animals. Although that’s his job as director of an animal shelter. I don’t understand! Why would the Kern County Animal Shelter choose to euthanize animals?? They killed 70 dogs in ONE DAY!! They publish that they kill 500 animals per month. Josh is waiting to take more every week.
Thank you for reading this and any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated by ALL!!

Rachael, I wanted to suggest another shelter that could use all the help it can get, Tri County Animal Rescue in Alexis, NC 28006. I adopted one of my babies from them and they work very hard to make sure that many abandoned and abused animals are taken care of. This shelter is located at a home of these animal lovers. They started out taking in beagles and now they have everything. All I ask is that you check out their website, http://www.tcar.us, or contact them at 704-263-2444. These are wonderful people and deserve some recognition for their efforts to save these animals. Thank you for your time and I would love to hear from you.

I have been voting for Angel’s Gate Hospice because I make doggie scarves and donate a $1.00 for every one I sell. I have a Chichuahua with water on the brain and know how much it cost to take care of a disabled dog. I think it is wonderful that these people care for these animals no matter the cost. My Chi is named Pixie. Thanks for all you do.

I think what everyone is doing for animals is amazing! I operate a pitbull rescue center. At this point,I have 39 dogs mostly pits(I can’t turn away a stray). We pay for everything and with three kids to raise also,it gets very hard. We manage though! I do adopt them out to suitable homes. That’s been a learning experience. You truely don’t know the cruelty that people can think of until you get in a business like this. I would really appreciate anyones help if at all possible. Rachael,I really think what you do for the animals is great!!!!!!!!

DEAR RACHAEL,
I AM A ANIMAL LOVER AND I HAVE 3 DOGS AND I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS FEEDING MY DOGS, MY SON WORKS FOR A PET STORE AND HE TOLD ME ABOUT WHAT CAN BE FOUND IN DOG FOOD. SO ONCE WHEN I WAS SHOPPING WITH MY HUSBAND WE STARTED TO CHECK THE INFORMATION ON THE BAG OF DOG FOOD WE USE TO BUY. I WAS SURPRISED WHAT WAS IN IT,NO WONDER MY DOGS ACTED LIKE THEY DID NOT WANT TO EAT IT UNLESS I ADDED SOMETHING TO IT,SO I GOT A SAMPLE OF NUTRISH AND THEY LIKED IT SO NOW I BUY NOTHING BUT THAT I JUST WISH WALMART STILL CARRIED IT THEY USE TO BUT SUDDENLY THEY STOPPED. I GO TO FOOD LION AND PURCHASE IT. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT ANIMALS DO HAVE FEELINGS AND THEY LOVE UNCONDITIONLY AND THEY ONLY ASK TO BE CARED FOR AND PROTECTED JUST LIKE OUR CHILDREN DO WHEN THEY ARE BORN TO US. RACHAEL YOU DO A WONDERFUL JOB AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW I FIND YOU A VERY SWEET AND GOOD NATURED PERSON. THANK YOU, MRS CATHY ELLINGTON, GRAHAM NC.

I know this ‘contest’ is over, however I need to introduce you to our new rescue for Great Danes. We are a 501C 3 non-profit organization and just getting up and running. ALL volunteers with positions have been involved with Great Dane Rescue in the past. There are years and years of experience within all the ranks. We are trying not only to save Great Danes lives, but to Educate, doing things at schools with children, events not only for fundraising, but for informing people how important and ‘green’ it is to adopt for so manyh reasons. The rescue does have an Executive Summary that I would love to send you to show you how serious and professionally laid out this rescue is. If you would consent to reading this Summary, and or talk to our President, I would be grateful beyond words.
I watch your show daily and I think you are a very real down to earth person and really care about things you are involved in. I don’t have a TV show of my own and never will, but have the same drive and concern for animals.
I thank you for your time reading this and look forward to a reply from you. I know I must be one among many, but if one doesn’t try, one will never know.
Sincerely,
Heidi L.

Just wanted to say thanks to Rach for creating the Nutrish dog food. I have 2 diabetic pugs that are limited to what they can eat when it comes to store bought pet foods. After reading the ingrediants list on the bag of Nutrish… I was impressed, I had found a dog food that not only was healty for my boys but it is also affordable.
I had been buying 2 different kinds of food, one more healthy for the pugs($50 a bag) and then one a little less expensive, not really as healthy but affordable for my labs. Nutrish is a healthy affordable dog food that I can afford to feed to all my dogs.
Thanks again for caring!!!
Sincerely,
Cindy
