Spent that age of my life living in the West Bronx and the Chinese takeout on my block was as you described. I have to confess I often went just for the french fries, which, although cooked in the same old-oil as the chicken and ribs and fish and frozen, had somehow the ineluctable grace of potato and oil bliss.
