Getting rid of cooking odors

Dear Cleaning Lady: How do I get rid of cooking odors? I cooked a seafood medley on Sunday and
this is Wednesday and I’m still smelling it, all through the house! My house
is small and older so it doesn’t have a stove fan and I can’t afford to
install one. What can I do? Sincerely, Rita Q Dear Rita Q: Great question! Here are some ways to get rid of funky kitchen odors like fish:
  • Set out a small bowl of vinegar (hooray for vinegar - the Cleaning Lady is ready to start a fan club) next to the stove to absorb odors - it will take a bit to start working so put it out right after cooking.
  • You can also try boiling a mixture of 1 quart water and 1/4 cup vinegar on the stove for a few minutes.
  • Make sure all stove top and oven splatters are cleaned thoroughly - try a 50/50 water and vinegar solution. Remember to clean the stove top back splash and range hood as well.

For seafood odors a very small bowl of milk will do the trick. I haven’t tried it with anything else.

  2. Removing odors from our cabins is often a chore but one odor…somewhat impossible. Maple Bacon. It seems to permeate EVERYTHING. I would like to ban that from being sold at the market in town. We have sprayed Febreeze, “whatodor” product, even at times, washed all the curtains and bedding and the walls…. I will try the vinegar trick and let you know how that works. Besides asking our guests to not cook it, any other thoughts? And why is it so awful?

Vinegar is also the easiest way to clean a microwave without scrubbing. Simply put the vinegar and water mixture on the microwave plate and turn it on for 3 or 4 minutes. All you have to do is wipe the remains out with a wet sponge! Walla! Edwina

Regarding the bacon, I now bake in the oven like most restaurants to–to help it stay straight and even. Since I’ve been doing this, the smell isn’t as bad a frying. Give it a try!

I also put vinegar in a bowl with some water and
” cook ” it for a couple of minutes in the micro whenever theres some sticky bits to clean up.

1/4 cup of vinegar in your wash will remove cooking, sweat (& other body-related odors) from all items. I use this with EVERY wash and have taught my husband to use it in his bicycling and jogging clothing in particular. In gear that must air dry and cannot have fabric softner, I use apple cider vinegar & it gives the clothing the fresh scent of apples.

I start it as soon as I start cooking.
