A Valentine’s Day Yappy Hour

Well, another Valentine’s Day is over.  As usually, I had a great time, but didn’t spend it in the traditional way.  Everyone knows I love a holiday, but sometimes I think it’s nice to do something a little different, a little wild - far enough outside the ordinary to take the pressure off making things perfect.  So last week, I hit the chic Muse Hotel in Midtown, to check out my friend Wendy Diamond’s Yappy Hour (clever right?), her take on a wild Valentine’s Day Party.  Unfortunately, my date (and dog) Baloo could not attend.  She even missed her chance to play cupid, because at this Valentine’s day party, candy made way for dog treats, and pets proved the perfect icebreakers.

Wendy is a pro-planner of pootch themed parties that benefit pooch themed charities.  The hip crowd at the Muse Hotel, for example, were engaging in their flirting and fun to celebrate the release of Wendy’s new book “It’s A Dog’s World,” and to promote animal rescue. So not only were there cute, well-dressed pooches of all variety there to take some pressure off the mingling singles, there was that heart-warming, tail-wagging feeling of doing something to benefit a great cause.  Some of the V-Day doggies were pulling double cupid duty too:  As representatives from the Humane Society of New York, they weren’t just matchmaking for the party goers, but acting as puppy love ambassadors for all those terrific shelter pets in need of loving homes.

Les Compagnons provided delicious wine with labels featuring favorite dog breeds, and doggy-named selections like “Golden Chardonnay,” and “Good Boy Cabernet.”  Portions of the sales price of each Les Compagnons bottle sold go to local pet charities.  And don’t worry kitty crowd - cat charities are included too.

Mixed drinks were furnished by Bulldog Gin, along with tail-wagging cocktail recipes, such Puppy Love and Lucky Lemonade:

- Orange Juice

I live in the boondocks. Reading Evette’s blogs make me want to move to New York or Miami immeidately where it seems all the interesting stuff is going on.

  3. The party seems cool but I also love it that you are always rooting for the animals . . .it does make us feel better if we can just help out a little. Keep up the notes on Baloo!

  4. That Rachael Ray loves dogs (and has dog named Baloo)and has made people aware that Wendy Diamond’s “Animal Fair is a lifestyle magazine and website for animal lovers that supports fairness to animals and animal rescue” is great. That “Animal Fair is dedicated to highlighting non-profit animal organizations, giving them the opportunity to tell their inspirational stories and to provide contact information so that your readers can become involved is also inspirational. We support these goals and aspirations.

A focus for animal lovers that has had exponential growth recently and would further help to contribute to a reduction in orphaned companion animals is the area of estate planning for pets-including pet wills and pet trusts.

Professor Gerry W. Beyer & I are both animal lovers and hope to influence as many people as possible who own pets to ensure they plan and provide for their pet’s well being if they become incapacitated or they predecease them.

Although the above message may seem a little emotional, consider the fate of American writer Dorothy Parker’s last little dog, which she had named C’est Tout (That’s All). When Parker died in her Manhattan apartment in June 1967, C’est Tout was found whimpering beside her body, heartbroken and loyal to the end. In her will, Parker left the bulk of her modest estate to a National Association. She had made no provision for her dog, however. Poor little C’est Tout went to the local pound and was never heard of again.
