Plants in the House – Good for Your Health

Plants not only make your house look better, they can make you feel better too. Studies show that plants can help to purify the air, make you feel more hopeful and optimistic (according to studies done by hospital doctors) and fight fatigue and colds (by increasing humidity levels and decreasing dust).

Experts recommend 15-18 house plants (of 6-8 inches in diameter) in a 1800 square foot house for optimal results – if you follow this recommendation you can eliminate up to 87% of toxins in your air in 24 hours! Sounds like a lot of plants to you if you are starting from ground zero? Start with one or two and go from there. The top plants for purifying air are:

  • Dragon tree
  • Ivy
  • Ficus
  • Philodendrons
  • Spider plants
  • Peace lilies
  • Ferns
  • Chrysanthemums
  • Palms

It’s up to you to keep your plants healthy to get optimal benefits. Don’t have a green thumb? Here are a few plants in the “hard to kill” category:

  • Golden pothos vine¬†
  • Spider plant
  • Snake plant and mother-in-law’s tongue
  • Dracaena species
  • Succulents and Cacti
  • Bromeliads
  • Lucky bamboo

Do you have plants in your house? What do you recommend to readers with “brown” thumbs?

Hey Rach. Thanks for the “heads up” about plants. But, I live in an apartment in NJ and want to grow HERBS. I LOVE them! I’m fortunate enough to have a tinsey-winsy balcony facing East – but I have limited space and after the summer … my herbs (and plants) die. (I always say a prayer for them …) Can you send a crew to my apt. to help? I’d be forever grateful! And hey, I could use a bit of advice about cooking healthy meals for 1. (and hopefully 2 … or a crew!) I’m Italian and feel very guilty about wasting food and killing plants. I need HELP!

Hey Rach. I have house plants around my house. I have foumd that the Philodendron is a no-brainer to grow, just water when the leaves start to curl. The thing about the Philodendron is if you have cats, the plant is toxic for them if eaten.

I love my house plants. I have a prayer plant that is my favorite.A spider plant. I tell them all how much I love them. I don’t know the name of a plant a friend sent me while in the hospital. It is so beautiful and multiplies as does the prayer plants. I start new plants of them both for favorite people.
