I have an answer for why Italian Christians eat only fish on Christmas eve or at least this is what my mother told me: it is because all the farm animals were gathered around Mary when Jesus was born and therefore out of respect to the animals no red meat is eaten on Christmas eve. The reason we have 7 types of fis is because the number seven represents the number of sacraments, the number of days in the creation story and a number that represents perfection in the bible.
