Looking for a last minute gift? With only a handful of days before Christmas day, picking the ultimate present can be more tough than fun. However, this comprehensive, tip-to-toe beauty list is full of presents that pamper every part of the body, and are all my personal favorites. 1. Nuxe Fondant Body Scrub Ideal for the main man (or woman) in your life, this luxe body scrub contains almond and orange flower petals, orange zest, lychee kernel and walnut shell powder to exfoliate your limbs and leave them smelling like you’ve spent a day at the spa. 2. Makeup Look for Every Hair Color

Thinking of switching up your hair color this season? Whether you make the leap from blonde to brunette or balayage to fiery red, it doesn’t mean you have to change your entire beauty regimen. All you need is one great makeup look that works no matter what your hair color.  According to makeup artist Susie Sobol (she works with beauty legend Diane Kendal), you can take a bold lip and ‘60s-inspired cat eye from a sexy blonde to a sultry redhead! “A bold lip and an easy cat eye looks great on blondes, brunettes, and redheads alike,” says makeup artist Susie Sobol. “First, neutralize any redness with a base of foundation or tinted moisturizer. If a bold lip scares you, go for [...]...

Rodney Cutler for ULTA Fall/Winter Hair Collection Part 2

Here are a few more looks that I created for ULTA’s Fall/Winter Collection featuring styling alternatives for both long and short hair. These styles can easily transition from a day at work to an evening out or holiday party. Enjoy! Look 1 and 2(Top Left and Bottom Left): Rough dry hair with a nozzled blow dryer and your fingers until about 85% dry. Take a flat brush to the bang section and start drying the bangs, moving your brush back and forth and up and down concentrating the air at the roots until dry. This will ensure a natural fall of the bangs allowing you to go from look two to look one easily. Starting at the nape of the neck, take 2” horizontal sections and dry [...]...

Rodney Cutler for ULTA Fall/Winter Hair Collection

It’s a common expectation at our salon to request a cut that has multiple options in terms of styling. This season’s Fall 2012 collection that I created for ULTA is all about transformation and styling alternatives. These looks are all very quick and easy to achieve even for a non-professional. Style 1-  Center Part with Ribbon Curls- On damp hair apply preferred styling product and comb through with a wide toothed comb for even distribution. Using a blow dryer with a nozzle and a flat boar bristle brush, smooth the hair section by section wrapping it around the curvature of the head in all directions to create movement. Be sure that the air from the nozzle of the blow dryer is [...]...

Fashion Week Recap!

Fashion week really explored the color wheel this season! We saw splashes of color from head to toe coupled with strong elements of design and texture; Spring 2013 was definitely one of the most vibrant seasons to date! Christine Alcalay Inspiration: Our hair needed reflected simply a child’s innocents coupled with the feeling of wisdom that comes when a girl has to endure life’s challenges.  She may look similar as she becomes a young woman but emotionally, spiritually and physically she has forever changed. We have coupled loose, random texture within a tight, restricted silhouette in tribute. How to Achieve the Look: On dry hair, section out the nape, from ear to ear.  Clip away the hair at the top and [...]...

Summer Stress on our Tresses

With only a few weeks left of our fun in the sun, I thought we should take this opportunity to discuss, from a scientific approach how UV rays cause damage to our locks internally. While we spend less time in the sun during the fall and winter months, remember the sun stays by our side year round.  Our friends over at Redken’s R&D department shed some light on the subject.  Don’t worry you can nurse your hair back to health! Consequences of UV Rays: · Discoloration · Roughness · Fragility Discoloration UV particles degrade melanin pigments in the hairs natural color causing a lightening or almost bleaching effect. Roughness/ Fragility Cuticle damage and deterioration can occur with exposure to UV rays. It makes hair less hydrophobic and more [...]...

Hair Weather Woes

There’s nothing worse than leaving the sanctuary of climate control with a fresh hair style only to be slammed by the elements! We’ve all been at the mercy of the Mother Nature and it’s always detrimental to our styled locks. Have no fear we have the hair solutions you’ve been looking for to combat humidity, wind and rain. Problem: Beating Humidity Solution: Use it to your benefit! Take your tousled frizz and turn it into a runway ready do in minutes. Begin by pulling all the hair to one side and create a loose, low sitting side braid. Work with the texture and frizz by roughing up the scalp with the palm of your hands to exaggerate your overall disheveled look. [...]...

Coloring Short Hair

Coloring short hair can be a very tricky endeavor, and should never be approached in the same manner as coloring long hair.  Color expert Dallace Walsh of Cutler 57th St offers up some tips on how to get the best results for coloring your short tresses. If you have a haircut that is like Victoria Beckham’s or Michelle Williams’, highlights should fade from very heavy around the face to almost nothing in the back to the nape. This avoids that strong shelf of color from blonde to your natural color. Now, if you have something closer to a pixie cut like Emma Watson, and you want highlights, then you really only have a couple of good options. Either a few [...]...

Eye Brow Enhancement Through Color

As a colorist there’s no law you must go by when it comes to lightening or darkening your brows. However, there are a few guidelines that should be followed for the best results. Gaby Bowen from our Cutler 57th St. salon is here to share some insight on the topic. My personal preference is giving the brows a natural shape and softening them. This is a great way to open your eyes and brighten your face and it’s perfect for summer. If you’re a blonde and you want to go lighter try to avoid going lighter then 1 1/2 shades. Avoid color that has golden tones in it, as it will turn your brows orange. I prefer to stick [...]...
