The Clean Plates Cookbook

Have you ever wished that when you went out to dinner, or visited a new town, you knew where to find a restaurant that served healthy food? Well that’s the information that the Clean Plates website provides, and now they’ve published The Clean Plates Cookbook, full of healthy recipes — many of which are contributed by their favorite restaurant chefs. Above: Kale Salad recipe, by chef Hadley Schmitt of New York’s Northern Spy Food Co. restaurant, from The Clean Plates Cookbook Most healthy cookbooks have an outlook on eating that relies on one exclusive theory, such as veganism, raw food, the Paleo diet, etc. But the author of The Clean Plates Cookbook, Jared Koch, is a nutritionist, and he has a different [...]...

If You Think You Don’t Eat Like An American, Just Go To Israel

I am not the most adventurous of men. In fact, I don’t even like to leave the living room. And yet, here I am in Israel, of all places, trying to figure out how to eat. It’s easier than I thought; but it’s not that easy. Our eating habits don’t move with us that easily; they are part of where we live and how our parents ate, and what stores are in the neighborhood, and who delivers. I’ve always thought that geography was underrated as an aspect of our how we eat. Just because regional foodways have disappeared, and we no longer have much in the way of traditional foods or for that matter even local produce, that doesn’t [...]...

Let’s Talk Prom!

Accessories are really creating a splash! From the runway to the red carpet and with prom season upon us, it is the perfect way to decorate hair. Accessories can be large or small, cheap or expensive, elaborate or delicate - they really help to play up that hair for your big event.   Simple clean headbands are perfect for a chic sleek chignon. Bra strap headbands are a great, easy-to-use, elegant option. Thicker headbands are better suited to more elaborate hairstyles. The use of broaches can be a fun addition when there’s texture and volume in the hair. Flowers can be tricky but when used correctly they can add a nice touch! But, err on the side of caution, as you don’t want your hair to be mistaken [...]...

Grammy’s!!!

What’s better than LA during the Grammy’s?! And while I was out there I had the fortunate pleasure of doing Fergie’s hair for the Vanity Fair party. Definitely a new look for her! It was very 1940’s inspired, tousled with loose curls and pulled up in the back. Needless to say, Fergie looked stunning and with her versatility this sophisticated look was a hit. Here is how to achieve it… Step 1) Spray hair with Cutler’s Protectant Treatment Spray to protect hair from heat damage, followed by a blast of Cutler’s Volumizing Spray. Step 2) Spray each section of hair with a bit of hairspray (I used Redken Workforce 09) before wrapping around a 1/2 inch curling iron to create [...]...

Are you a pear shape gal? Tips for you!

Its funny how people use food to describe their bodies. Rachael is a pear. I am an ice cream cone. Some gals have apple bums. Some sport muffin tops. If you are proportioned like RR, I have a tip for you. The wrap dress is a great solution. Ann Taylor Loft does a super soft grey or brown wrap dress that looks very similar to a dress that Rachael wore from Diane Von Furstenburg. Check out anntaylorloft.com-$79 I got it in both colors for Rachael and she found it super comfy. It shows off her waist and doesn’t cling too much. Find yourself a great boot at zappos.com I like the bouquets Bess for $79.95! Its stretch so it can fit most calves. Designer looks for less! [...]...

Don’t burn the garlic-Fashion Foundation

If you’re going to make sauce, you need to build the flavor. Once you burn the garlic you have to start over. If you are building a house you need to lay a good foundation. If you want to look delicious in your clothes, you need a good bra. You may need spanx as well. Treat yourself to the luxury of spending a little more on your lingerie. You need to organize yourself underneath your clothes. Ask to get measured the next time you are in the intimate department. Most people do not know their true size. A good bra like a good sauce makes all the difference. ...

Sweet Jane’s Leftover Fashion

It’s that time of year again! Find a cobbler of your choice (shoe not fruit) and dig through your closet for those leftover dusty boots and shoes. Savor the possibilities! Boot styles are so varied this year that I am willing to make a bet that you can find leftover boots from last year and maybe 10 years back (if you hoard shoes like me) that can be refurbished for this season. Accept the challenge! It can be really rewarding and cheaper than a new pair of shoes. Round, pointy, square toes, thick heel, thin heel,wedge- it all can work. Drag them to your shoe joint of choice and get them re-heeled,re-soled,conditioned ,etc… I have paid $40 to bring an old pair of [...]...

A fashion find for the Fall

I don’t know if you’re like me, but I have been really noticing the womens’ clothes at Target for the past year or so. However, it’s hit or miss-sometimes things look good on the rack but just don’t fit me correctly. I tend to like some brands over others and I absolutely adore the maternity clothes. But…last week I bought this coat from the Isaac Mizrahi collection and not only does it fit to flatter, but it also really does its job. When I say “does its job,” I don’t mean as a raincoat, because I haven’t worn it in the rain yet. However, I did learn two things today about my new coat today: Being that I am [...]...
