Nita’s Date Bars

“This recipe was given to me by a friend of mine many years ago. After tasting the first one, I was hooked. I don’t make them very often, because if I do, I don’t have the will power to stay away from them. They are that good!!!”

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1 8-ounce package dates (chopped)
  • 3 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon mace
  • 1 cup. chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Preparation

Pre-heat oven to 350°F.

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, soda, water, vanilla and dates.


In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and mace. Add to butter mixture and stir. Add chopped nuts and stir.


On lightly floured board, shape in rolls 10″ long, 3/4″ diameter. Place two rolls on greased cookie sheet. With fingers, flatten to 1/4 – 1/2″ thickness. Sprinkle with sugar.

Bake for about 25 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool before slicing.
