- 2 cakes yeast
- 1/4 cup lukewarm water
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup butter, plus extra for buttering the pan and brushing the Povitica after it comes out of the oven
- 2 eggs, well beaten
- 8 cups flour (and more to dust the board or countertop)
- 2 cups milk
- 6 eggs, unbeaten
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 pounds ground nuts (such as pecans, almonds or walnuts or a combination)
- 2 cups honey
Soften the yeast in water. In the meantime, scald the milk. Combine the hot milk, sugar, salt and butter. Blend thoroughly, then cool to lukewarm. Add the eggs and softened yeast to the milk mixture. Blend thoroughly.
Sift 6 cups of flour into a large bowl. Gradually add the milk mixture, beating vigorously. This makes a sticky dough. Gradually sift in the remaining 2 cups of flour.
Place the dough on a well-floured board and knead for 18-20 minutes. Place the dough in a large bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let it rise for 2 hours.
Meanwhile, put all the filling ingredients in heavy-duty skillet. Cook until thickened. Let cool.
Pre-heat the oven to 350°F.
Roll out dough until it is very, very thin. Brush the dough with melted butter. Spread the filling to the edge of dough and roll it tightly.
Circle the roll in a large, buttered roaster pan and bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush with butter. Wait until completely cooled to cut.
