What’s the difference between a shallot and an onion?

Shallots and onions are very similar and the differences are really all about taste.  Shallots, when cooked, yield a milder tastes than onions.  However, some people will add fresh shallots directly to salads and eat them raw.  They are pungent, but a bit more delicate than a cooking onion.
