Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

I am teaching a cooking class for 16 girls ages 10-13 this week. On the first day I asked each girl to name one dish they would like to learn how to make. The responses? Half “I don’t knows” (to which I responded “Name one food you like, come on,” and most still met me with “I don’t knows.” Being a tween is tough – holy age of self consciousness. The girls who did name a food came up with the usual suspects:

“Anything chocolate.”

And one “Fruit Salad.” She got brownie points.

Good thing I like all these foods too :-). This week we have made french toast and smoothies, Mexican day with salsa, guacamole and quesadillas, chocolate day with chocolate dipped strawberries and chocolate covered pretzel rods, and mini calzones and mini brownies. The chocolate covered strawberries were ridiculously easy yet looked (and tasted) great. I will defintely make these again with the kids (would be a good birthday party activity), and they would make a sweet teacher or hostess gift.

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

6 ounces semi sweet chocolate chips

3 ounces white chocolate chips

20 strawberries, with stems

Wash and dry the strawberries very well (if they are wet, the chocolate won’t stay on). Melt the semi sweet chocolate in the microwave at half power, stopping to stir every 30 seconds. Watch closely so it doesn’t scorch! When completely melted and smooth, hold strawberries by stem, dip in chocolate, swirling to let excess chocolate drip back in the bowl. Place strawberries on wax paper to set. When all the strawberries have been dipped, melt white chocolate using the same method as semi sweet. Take a spoon and decoratively drizzle the white chocolate over the dark chocolate. Let set for 30 minutes minimum. Store in fridge for up to 2 days.
